Tour Overview

Join this 6-day African safari, which includes the Mount Kilimanjaro climb through the Umbwe Route. The trek is one of the highest and most strenuous due to steep mountaineering foothills, while also offering inspiring views, making it an ideal trek for adventurers. The Umbwe Route is less known for high-altitude trekking as it is located in Kilimanjaro National Park, giving a jaw-dropping experience to able trekkers. This guided trek has a variety of ecosystems from dense rainforest to extreme alpine desert, and as a result boasts easy wildlife spotting. The route also has a high summit success rate due to its acclimatization policy. This trip works best for those who wish to add a Kilimanjaro climb to their Tanzania safari or camping safari plans.

What makes this itinerary special?

Meet your expert guides for a detailed pre-trek briefing, covering the Umbwe Route itinerary, safety protocols, equipment checks, and high-altitude trekking tips. Spend the afternoon relaxing, exploring Moshi’s bustling markets, or engaging in cultural experiences, such as learning about the Chagga people’s traditions. A nutritious dinner and early rest prepare you for the Tanzanian wilderness awaiting you.

  • Activities: Airport transfer, pre-trek briefing, cultural exploration
  • Accommodation: Lodge in Moshi
  • Meals: Dinner

After breakfast, a 1-hour drive through scenic villages takes you to Umbwe Gate (1,600 m / 5,249 ft) for registration. Your guided trek begins with a 5-6 hour hike covering 11 km through dense rainforest trails, where you may spot wildlife like colobus monkeys or colorful birdlife, reminiscent of Tanzania’s national parks. The trail is steep and direct, offering an immediate challenge for this camping safari. Arrive at Umbwe Cave Camp (2,850 m / 9,350 ft), set in a forested clearing with views of the surrounding canopy. Your crew sets up tents, and a warm meal fuels you for your first night in the Tanzanian wilderness.

  • Hiking Time: 5-6 hours
  • Distance: 11 km
  • Altitude Gain: 1,250 m
  • Accommodation: Tented camp
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Today’s 4-5 hour trek covers 6 km, ascending steeply through heath and moorland to Barranco Camp (3,976 m / 13,044 ft). The trail transitions from dense forest to open moorland, revealing stunning views of Kibo Peak and the iconic Barranco Wall. The Umbwe Route’s direct ascent tests your endurance, but the scenic trails reward you with dramatic landscapes. Your guides monitor your health to support acclimatization, critical for summit success. Arrive at camp by midday, nestled in the lush Barranco Valley. Rest, hydrate, and enjoy a hot meal while soaking in the Tanzanian wilderness.

  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Distance: 6 km
  • Altitude Gain: 1,126 m
  • Accommodation: Tented camp

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Starting with the 1 to 2 hour uphill scramble of Barranco Wall, which is a steep climb, more of a walk than a technical climb. The wall reveals stunning sights of Kibo Peak and glaciers in the distance. After this stretch of trekking the wall, you will be taking an additional 4 to 5 hours hike of about 5 km through rugged and complex terrains that lead to Karanga Camp (3,995 m / 13,106 ft). The pace of the walk is relatively moderate, which helps with acclimatization and improves your high-altitude trekking experience. The guides tell you more about the region’s geology, which adds value to your adventure in Africa. Upon arriving at camp, you have plenty of time to relax in the peaceful valley that surrounds the camp. Get yourself energized for the next stage of the Kilimanjaro climb with a light dinner.

  • Hiking Time: 4-5 hours
  • Distance: 5 km
  • Altitude Gain: 19 m
  • Accommodation: Tented camp
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Barafu Camp (4,673 m / 15,331 ft), your base for the summit attempt, requires about 3-4 hours of trekking, which covers 4 kilometers. This will be your starting point for the summit attempt. The stunning view of Mawenzi Peak will come into view during the beautiful trek, which has very few signs of life and is an alpine desert. It is typical of the unique beauty the Umbwe Route possesses. Guide your pace so you reach the camp by noon, and if you have enough time to rest, hydrate, and get ready for the midnight summit surge, you'll be able to attend the informative meeting about summit day procedures. They hand out rather comprehensive briefings detailing pacing, layering, safety measures, and more. An early dinner and rest are essential for the zenith of your adventure. Remember, this is the highlight of the trip you longed for.

  • Hiking Time: 3-4 hours
  • Distance: 4 km
  • Altitude Gain: 678 m
  • Accommodation: Tented camp
  • Meals: Breakfast, lunch, dinner

On the summit day, your Kilimanjaro climb will begin just after midnight. Over the next 6-8 hours, you will climb 5 km to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m / 19,341 ft), the Roof of Africa. You will be guided by headlamps as you attempt to crawl over steep scree slopes through Stella Point (5,756 m / 18,885 ft) by sunrise to achieve the glacier rim of crater vistas. After getting the additional motivation, one last push, belting at the Peak allows you to claim your successful summit while enjoying 360 views of the wilderness of Tanzania and its surroundings. Remember to take photos! You will have to descend 12 km over 5-7 hours to Mweka Camp (3,068 m / 10,065 ft) and go through the moorland and rainforest. You can then rest as the high-altitude trekking journey comes to an end for you.

  • Hiking Time: 11-15 hours (6-8 hours ascent, 5-7 hours descent)

FAQs for the 6-Day Mount Kilimanjaro Umbwe Route Climb

1. Is the Umbwe Route suitable for beginner trekkers?

The Umbwe Route is not suitable for beginners due to its steep, rugged terrain and rapid altitude gain, which demand advanced hiking experience and strong physical fitness. The 6-day itinerary’s strategic rest helps, but prior high-altitude trekking experience is essential. Beginners should consider gentler routes like Marangu or longer itineraries for safer acclimatization.

2. What is the summit success rate for the 6-day Umbwe Route?

The 6-day Umbwe Route has a summit success rate of approximately 85-90%, high for experienced trekkers due to the rest day at Barranco Camp. Proper training, hydration (3-4 liters daily), and slow pacing, guided by professionals, significantly enhance your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak.

3. What ecosystems will I encounter on the Umbwe Route?

You’ll traverse montane rainforests, heather moorlands, alpine deserts, and glacial zones, encountering vibrant flora like giant groundsels and impatiens kilimanjari, and fauna such as blue and colobus monkeys. The route offers stunning views of the Southern Glaciers, Barranco Wall, and Western Breach, showcasing Kilimanjaro’s diverse landscapes.

4. How can I prevent altitude sickness on this 6-day trek?

Stay hydrated with 3-4 liters of water daily, follow the “pole pole” (slowly) pacing, and take advantage of the rest day at Barranco Camp for acclimatization. Consult a doctor about medications like Diamox, and report AMS symptoms like headaches or fatigue immediately for prompt action, as the route’s rapid ascent increases altitude risks.

5. What gear is essential for the Umbwe Route climb?

Essential gear includes waterproof clothing, broken-in hiking boots, trekking poles, gaiters, a headlamp with spare batteries, sunglasses, and layered clothing (base layers, fleece, down jacket) for extreme temperature changes. A reusable water bottle, personal medications, and a warm sleeping bag are critical for safety and comfort on this high-altitude trek.
